Spiralized Sweet Potato Fries

Spiralized Sweet Potato Fries are thick, curly strips of sweet potato coated lightly in cornstarch and oil, baked or air fried until crisp outside and tender inside. They offer a satisfying texture with a balance of natural sweetness and saltiness from seasoning. This method keeps the fries from getting soggy and encourages a crisp finish without deep frying.

Description

These fries start with thick spiralized or evenly cut sweet potato strips tossed in cornstarch to absorb moisture and coated with a neutral cooking oil. They are baked in a hot oven at 400°F, spread out to avoid overcrowding, or air fried to crisp the edges while preserving the soft interior. Turning the fries halfway through baking helps even cooking and browning.

The cornstarch coating prevents sogginess by absorbing excess moisture, and careful spacing on the tray or in the air fryer basket promotes air circulation for crispness. The fries are seasoned simply with salt and pepper but can be enhanced with spices like cajun seasoning or Middle Eastern blends for variety. Serving with dips such as ketchup or sriracha aioli complements their sweet and savory profile.

Using a cooking mesh or wire rack can improve crispness by lifting fries off the pan. The fries will continue to crisp slightly after removal, so monitoring doneness is important to avoid overcooking to dryness.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 sweet potato raw, peeled, medium
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch aka cornflour
  • 1 tablespoon neutral cooking oil plus extra for greasing, generic cooking oil
  • salt
  • black pepper

Instructions

Oven Bake

  1. Heat oven to 400°F (200°C) and lightly grease a baking tray with cooking oil.
  2. Thickly spiralise the sweet potatoes, or alternatively cut into thin strips.
  3. In a large bowl, gently toss the sweet potato with the cornflour. Add the oil and toss to coat.
  4. Spread it all onto the baking tray, taking care not to overcrowd it or the results won’t be crispy. Use another baking tray if necessary. You can also place them onto a wire rack on the baking tray to encourage air circulation.
  5. Bake for 20 minutes, turning the sweet potatoes halfway through and turning the trays. They will continue to crisp up after they come out of the oven.
  6. Serve hot, seasoned with salt and pepper.

Air Fryer

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for about 3-5 minutes.
  2. While the air fryer is preheating, spiralize the sweet potatoes into thick spirals or cut them into thin strips.
  3. Place the spiralized sweet potatoes in a large bowl. Add the cornstarch and oil, tossing gently to coat evenly.
  4. Once the air fryer is preheated, lightly grease the air fryer basket with oil or use a non-stick cooking spray.
  5. Spread the spiralized sweet potatoes in a single layer in the air fryer basket, making sure they are not overcrowded.
  6. Cook the sweet potato fries in the air fryer for 15-20 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through to ensure even cooking.
  7. Check for desired crispiness. If needed, continue cooking for an additional 5 minutes.
  8. Once done, season the sweet potato fries with salt and pepper to taste.
  9. Serve hot and enjoy your crispy, air-fried spiralized sweet potato fries!

Notes

  • Try seasoning with cajun spice, Old Bay, or Baharat for different flavor profiles.
  • Serve with dipping sauces like homemade ketchup, tartar sauce, or sriracha aioli.
  • Coating with cornstarch helps absorb moisture to achieve crisp fries.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan or air fryer basket to avoid steaming instead of crisping.
  • Using a wire rack or cooking mesh can further improve crispiness.
  • Make thick spirals when spiralizing because they shrink during cooking.
  • Ensure the oven is preheated to get the best texture.
  • Fries will crisp more after removal from heat, so avoid overcooking.
