Split Pea and Ham Soup

Split Pea and Ham Soup is a comforting, hearty dish prepared by slow-cooking smoked ham shank with green split peas and aromatic vegetables until smooth and flavorful. The soup is thick and savory with tender bits of ham for added richness.

Description

This soup starts with cooking a smoked ham shank in water for several hours to release a deeply flavored broth. After cooling, the broth is separated from the ham shank, and the fat is rendered by reheating the broth with sautéed onions in an Instant Pot. Carrots, potatoes, and rinsed green split peas are added along with the strained ham broth and slow-cooked until the peas soften and the vegetables become tender.

The ham meat is removed from the shank, shredded, and added back into the soup to provide savory, smoky flavors and texture contrast. The result is a thick, creamy soup with a hearty mouthfeel and well-rounded flavors from the smoked ham and slow-cooked peas and vegetables.

This soup works well as a filling meal on its own or served with crusty bread. Making the broth separately ensures a clear, rich base, while the slow cook step melds the components into a comforting classic.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 lbs smoked ham shank
  • 1 lb green split peas dried
  • 1 onion small
  • 6 oz potato about 2 small potatoes
  • 4 oz carrot about 3 small carrots
  • 3 pints water

Instructions

  1. Put the smoked ham shanks into the Instant Pot. Add the water, put the glass lid on and set the Instant Pot to Soup /Broth button for 4 hours.
  2. After 4 hours, allow ham broth to cool, then remove the ham shanks. Place them in a sealed food container for storage. Pour the broth into a large (32oz) mason jar. Store the broth and the ham shanks in the refrigerator overnight.
  3. Peel and chop the potatoes, carrots and onions.
  4. Take the broth out of the refrigerator. Remove the 'disc' of hard white fat (this solidified as the broth cooled,) and place it in the Instant Pot. Push the Sauté button. As the fat heats up, add the onion and sauté for 5 minutes. Then add the carrots and potatoes.
  5. Add the ham broth and rinsed split peas to the Instant Pot and adjust the setting from Sauté to Slow Cooker. Cook for 45 minutes.
  6. Take the ham shanks out of the refrigerator and remove the meat fibers. Discard any gristle, bones and skin.
  7. Add the shredded ham to the soup and continue on with the Slow Cooker setting for another 15 minutes.
  8. No need to puree. Serve immediately.
