Starbucks Iced Chai Tea Latte Recipe (Copycat)

This recipe replicates the Starbucks Iced Chai Tea Latte, offering three methods to prepare chai concentrate from scratch or use store-bought. The drink balances spiced black tea concentrate with milk and ice, finished with a sprinkle of cinnamon. The homemade chai uses spices like cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, star anise, ginger, and nutmeg simmered with black tea leaves for a fragrant, mildly sweet concentrate. Mixing with milk and ice creates the refreshing iced latte.

Description

The Starbucks Iced Chai Tea Latte begins with a spiced chai concentrate made by gently simmering Darjeeling or a black tea blend with traditional chai spices including cinnamon sticks, cloves, cardamom pods, star anise, ginger slices, and freshly grated nutmeg. Vanilla extract and sweetener such as honey or maple syrup are added to balance the spices. After steeping, the mixture is strained to remove solids, yielding a smooth, aromatic concentrate.

To prepare the latte, ice is placed in a tall glass, then equal parts chai concentrate and preferred milk—dairy or plant-based—are poured over. Adjusting the ratio to 2:1 concentrate to milk yields a spicier drink. For a textured variation, ingredients can be shaken together or the milk frothed before combining. Cinnamon sprinkled on top adds a finishing spice note.

This drink provides a cold, spicy tea variation suited for warmer days or those who prefer chilled beverages. It’s adaptable with three methods: making chai concentrate at home, using store-bought concentrate, or brewing chai tea bags quickly for an iced latte.

Preparation tips include readying all spices beforehand for efficient simmering and being careful not to overheat the tea base to avoid bitterness. The homemade concentrate can be stored refrigerated for extended freshness.

Ingredients

Servings

Iced Chai Tea Latte Ingredients

  • 6 ounces chai concentrate (choose from three methods below)
  • 4-6 ounces milk or use other % or favorite plant-based product, whole
  • ice cubes
  • cinnamon for sprinkling on top

Method 1 - Homemade Chai Concentrate (so worth it)

  • 6-8 teaspoons Darjeeling tea or use 6-8 tea bags, may also use Assam, or your favorite black tea
  • 6 cups water filtered
  • 2-4 tablespoons ginger about ½-1 inch slices, sliced
  • 2 cinnamon stick two short sticks or one long stick, broken
  • 4-6 cloves
  • 6-7 cardamom pods
  • 1 star anise
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract or 1 tsp vanilla bean paste
  • ¼ -½ teaspoon nutmeg fresh grated is best
  • ¼-⅓ cup honey or favorite sweetener, maple syrup, agave, sugar, brown sugar or sugar substitute

Method 2 - Super Fast Starbucks Iced Latte

  • ½ cup chai concentrate Such as Tazo or Oregon Chai concentrate or your favorite
  • ½ cup milk or other % milk or non-dairy product, whole

Method 3 - Not quite so fast Iced Starbucks Iced Latte

  • 2 chai tea bags or 2 tsp loose leaf chai tea
  • ½ cup water just boiled, don’t overboil, boiling
  • 1-2 tsp honey or preferred sweetener, maple syrup, sugar or replacements work
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract real
  • ½ cup milk or preferred milk product, whole

Instructions

For all methods once you have chai concentrate

  1. Add ice to a tall glass (16 oz). Pour equal parts of chai concentrate and milk choice over the ice. If a spicier chai is desired, use more of a 2:1 ratio.
  2. If you prefer more of a shaken latte, place chai, milk, and ice in a shaker, and shake vigorously 10 or so times. Or if you have a cold frother, froth milk of choice, then add to the cold chai.

Notes

  • Prepare all spices in advance and gently crush them for best extraction during simmering.
  • Simmer chai spices and tea briefly (around 5 minutes) to avoid bitterness.
  • Steep the concentrate covered after simmering for 10-15 minutes to develop flavor.
  • Strain concentrate thoroughly to remove solids for a smooth drink.
  • Sweeten the concentrate to taste, using honey or preferred sweetener.
  • Adjust chai concentrate to milk ratio for desired spice intensity (2:1 for stronger chai).
  • Chill concentrate before assembling iced latte to maintain cold temperature.
  • Use a shaker or frother to create a foamy, well-mixed iced latte if preferred.
