Starbucks Iced Chai Tea Latte Recipe (Copycat)
Description
The Starbucks Iced Chai Tea Latte begins with a spiced chai concentrate made by gently simmering Darjeeling or a black tea blend with traditional chai spices including cinnamon sticks, cloves, cardamom pods, star anise, ginger slices, and freshly grated nutmeg. Vanilla extract and sweetener such as honey or maple syrup are added to balance the spices. After steeping, the mixture is strained to remove solids, yielding a smooth, aromatic concentrate.
To prepare the latte, ice is placed in a tall glass, then equal parts chai concentrate and preferred milk—dairy or plant-based—are poured over. Adjusting the ratio to 2:1 concentrate to milk yields a spicier drink. For a textured variation, ingredients can be shaken together or the milk frothed before combining. Cinnamon sprinkled on top adds a finishing spice note.
This drink provides a cold, spicy tea variation suited for warmer days or those who prefer chilled beverages. It’s adaptable with three methods: making chai concentrate at home, using store-bought concentrate, or brewing chai tea bags quickly for an iced latte.
Preparation tips include readying all spices beforehand for efficient simmering and being careful not to overheat the tea base to avoid bitterness. The homemade concentrate can be stored refrigerated for extended freshness.

- Prepare all spices in advance and gently crush them for best extraction during simmering.
- Simmer chai spices and tea briefly (around 5 minutes) to avoid bitterness.
- Steep the concentrate covered after simmering for 10-15 minutes to develop flavor.
- Strain concentrate thoroughly to remove solids for a smooth drink.
- Sweeten the concentrate to taste, using honey or preferred sweetener.
- Adjust chai concentrate to milk ratio for desired spice intensity (2:1 for stronger chai).
