Steak and Shake 5 way Chili

Steak and Shake 5 Way Chili is a hearty chili featuring ground chuck, tomato sauce, kidney beans, and a mix of spices including chili powder and garlic salt. The slow simmering of the beef, sauce, and beans with seasonings develops a rich, robust chili. Served traditionally over spaghetti and topped with chili sauce, shredded cheese, and diced onions, this chili combines spicy, savory, and tangy elements emblematic of the restaurant's classic preparation.

Description

Steak and Shake 5 Way Chili starts with sautéing ground chuck and optional onions before combining with celery salt, tomato sauce, kidney beans, garlic powder, garlic salt, chili powder, salt, black pepper, and water. The mixture simmers for 1.5 hours with tomato paste added later to thicken and deepen the flavor. The long simmer allows the spices and flavors to meld, producing a chili with depth and richness.

Distinctively, this chili is served over a bed of spaghetti and topped with additional chili sauce, chopped raw onions, and shredded Monterey jack or Colby cheese, creating the "5 way" combination typical of Steak and Shake. The inclusion of chili sauce adds tanginess, while the cheese and onions provide contrasting textures and flavors.

It can be enjoyed as a filling meal or repurposed by using leftover chili on tortilla chips for snacks. Leftover chili stores well in airtight containers refrigerated and reheats easily in the microwave.

Ingredients

Servings

Chili Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground chuck coarsely ground
  • 1 1/2 cups onion diced
  • 1 teaspoon celery salt
  • 32 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1 cup water
  • 28 ounces Kidney Beans light
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic salt
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder plus 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 16 ounces tomato paste

5 Way Chili add ons

  • 1 pound spaghetti
  • 1 onion diced
  • 12 ounces Monterey jack cheese Colby cheese blend
  • 2 tablespoons chili sauce Heinz brand

Instructions

  1. Please note the onions that are cooked in the chili are optional. You can leave them out. I personally love onions when cooked in the chili. Steak N Shake does not add onions to cooked chili. Chopped onions are served on top of the chili.
  2. In a skillet on medium-low heat saute ground beef and onions. When the beef has been cooked, drain all grease and place in a medium-large saucepan. Add celery salt, tomato sauce, kidney beans, garlic powder, garlic salt, chili powder, pepper, water, and salt, mix all ingredients.
  3. On low heat place a lid on the saucepan and simmer for one hour, stirring frequently. After the chili has been cooking for an hour add tomato paste and stir well. Place lid on the pan and simmer an additional half-hour. Prepare spaghetti as directed and drain.

Notes

  • Chili sauce provides a tangy contrast and can be found in most grocery condiment sections in glass bottles.
  • Leftover chili can be served on tortilla chips for a convenient snack or light lunch.
  • Store chili in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheat in the microwave before serving.
