Steamed Carrots

Steamed carrots are prepared by slicing carrots into sticks and cooking them gently in steam until tender-crisp. The carrots are then tossed with butter, salt, and black pepper to enhance their natural sweetness and add richness. This method preserves the carrots' bright color and texture, offering a simple, warm vegetable side dish.

Description

This Steamed Carrots recipe calls for cutting carrots into pieces about 2 inches long and half an inch thick. They are placed in a steamer basket above simmering water and steamed for 8 to 11 minutes until tender but still slightly firm to the bite. Steaming cooks the carrots gently without leaching nutrients or water-soluble flavors.

After steaming, the carrots are tossed with butter to coat and seasonings of salt and black pepper to balance the sweetness of the carrot. The butter adds a smooth richness that complements the vegetable’s natural earthiness and maintains a moist texture.

Steamed carrots can be served warm as a side dish alongside meats, grains, or in vegetable medleys. The simple preparation highlights the carrot’s bright color and fresh flavor, making it a versatile companion to many meals.

To ensure even cooking, monitor the water level under the steamer to prevent drying out. Fresh garden or baby carrots may cook faster, so timing adjustments might be necessary.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 pound carrot approx 5 medium-sized carrots
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Cut carrots into sticks 2" long and ½" thick (or use baby carrots).
  2. Place carrots in a steamer basket. Add water to the bottom of a saucepan so it is below the steamer basket, about 1 cup.
  3. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to a simmer and cover. Allow carrots to steam 8-11 minutes or until tender-crisp.
  4. Toss carrots with butter, salt, and pepper. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Check water level during steaming to prevent evaporation and add more as needed.
  • Use caution when removing the lid, as steam is very hot.
  • Garden fresh or baby carrots may cook faster; store-bought carrots might require a longer steaming time.
