Sticky Orange Beef

Sticky Orange Beef is a flavorful dish made with flank steak cooked in a tangy, sweet, and slightly spicy orange glaze. The sauce’s reduction forms a sticky coating that clings to tender beef pieces, complemented by fresh ginger, garlic, and sesame oil, offering a balance of sweetness and savory depth.

Description

This recipe starts by slicing flank steak into strips or chunks for quick, even cooking. The marinade-like sauce blends soy sauce, fresh orange juice and zest, grated ginger, brown sugar, red pepper flakes, and minced garlic. Cooking the steak in sesame oil develops a seared exterior, then simmering with the sauce reduces it to a sticky glaze.

The dish delivers a combination of citrus brightness and caramelized sugar, balanced with mild heat from the pepper flakes and aromatic ginger. Topped with green onions, sesame seeds, and extra orange zest, it adds freshness and nutty notes.

Sticky Orange Beef is ideal served over rice, where the flavorful sauce complements the grains, making it a satisfying main course for a weeknight dinner with bold flavors and a pleasing texture contrast from the tender meat coated in sticky sauce.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 lb flank steak
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1 orange juiced and tested
  • 1 teaspoon ginger freshly grated
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon garlic minced

Garnish:

  • orange zest
  • green onions sliced
  • sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Slice the flank steak into 2 inch chunks or into longer, thinner strips across the grain.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together: soy sauce, orange juice, orange zest, grated ginger, brown sugar, red pepper flakes and minced garlic. Whisk to combine and set aside.
  3. Add sesame oil to a medium cast iron pan over medium-high heat.
  4. Once the oil starts to simmer, add the sliced flank steak in one layer. Let it brown nicely for 1-2 minutes without turning it, after that, using tongs to turn beef on the other side to brown for another 2-3 minutes.
  5. Reduce heat to low-medium and add the sauce to the pan.
  6. Stir to combine and let the sauce simmer on low heat for about 5 minutes until it reduces in about half and it creates a sticky glaze.
  7. Serve the beef over rice.
  8. Garnish with fresh orange zest, green onions and sesame seeds.
