Stir Fry Sauce

This stir fry sauce blends soy sauce, vegetable stock, sesame oil, rice vinegar, garlic, ginger, sugar, and cornstarch to create a balanced sauce that combines salty, sweet, and tangy elements with a hint of spice. It thickens when simmered with stir-fried ingredients, providing a glossy coating that enhances vegetables, meats, or tofu.

Description

The Stir Fry Sauce recipe combines low-sodium soy sauce and vegetable stock as the savory base, enriched by sesame oil and brightened with rice vinegar. Garlic and grated ginger add aromatic depth while sugar balances acidity and saltiness. Cornstarch acts as a thickening agent when the sauce is heated with stir-fry ingredients, creating a slightly thickened, glossy finish. Optional red pepper flakes can add subtle heat.

This versatile sauce is easily adjusted by altering vinegar and sugar levels to shift the balance toward more sour or sweet notes. It can be prepared in advance and stored in the refrigerator for up to a week, ready to be incorporated into quick stir-fry meals.

Ingredients

Servings
  • ½ cup soy sauce low-sodium
  • ½ cup vegetable stock or water, low-sodium
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • ½ Tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 - 2 teaspoon ginger grated
  • 1 Tablespoon sugar up to 2 tablespoons for a more sweet than sour sauce, or honey
  • 1 Tablespoon cornstarch
  • Pinch red pepper flakes optional

Instructions

  1. In a bowl or mason jar with a lid, combine all of the ingredients and whisk or shake well until combined.
  2. Use immediately in a stir fry recipe, simmering it to thicken. Or store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week before using. This recipe yields approximately 1 ¼ cup of sauce; you may want to start using half in your recipe and add more as desired. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Increase rice vinegar to 1 tablespoon to enhance the sauce's sourness.
  • Add up to one additional tablespoon of sugar or honey to make the sauce sweeter.
  • Both brown and granulated sugar can be used based on preference.
  • For a thicker sauce, add up to 1 extra tablespoon of cornstarch during preparation.
  • Adjust the ingredient ratios to customize sweetness, sourness, and thickness according to taste.
