Strawberry Compote
Description
The Strawberry Compote starts with hulled and chopped strawberries cooked slowly with pure maple syrup for natural sweetness and a pleasant, deep flavor. Lemon juice adds bright acidity that balances the sweetness and prevents the fruit from becoming cloying. Vanilla extract contributes a subtle warmth and aromatic complexity to the compote.
Simmering the mixture for about 15 to 18 minutes softens the strawberries and helps them release their juices, blending flavors and thickening as water evaporates. No additional thickening agents are used, relying instead on natural fruit pectins and reduction.
This compote can be spooned warm or cold over breakfast items like oatmeal or pancakes, served alongside desserts such as ice cream or cheesecake, or incorporated into yogurt or cottage cheese. Its natural ingredients and gentle cooking preserve fresh strawberry flavor with added twists.
Ingredients
- 1 pound strawberries hulled and chopped, fresh or frozen
- ¼ cup maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice fresh
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Combine the strawberries, maple syrup, lemon juice, and vanilla in a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15 to 18 minutes, or until the strawberries are soft and juicy.
- Remove from the heat. The compote will thicken as it cools.
