Stromboli
Description
The Stromboli is prepared by sautéing mushrooms with butter, garlic, salt, and pepper to remove excess moisture and concentrate flavor. The pizza dough is rolled out into a rectangle and layered with sliced provolone, the sautéed mushrooms, pepperoni slices, and shredded mozzarella, leaving some edge space to seal properly. It is rolled from one long side and the ends are tucked under to keep the filling enclosed.
A seasoned oil mixture of olive oil, Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder is brushed over the top to enhance crust flavor and add extra richness. The Stromboli is then baked at 400ºF until golden brown, developing a crisp crust and melty, savory filling.
This Stromboli delivers a delicious combination of textures from the soft cheese, tender mushrooms, and chewy pepperoni wrapped in a crisp dough. It can be sliced and served as a hearty snack or meal. Using either homemade or store-bought pizza dough works well for this preparation.
Ingredients
- 8 oz. mushrooms $2.17, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic $0.08, minced
- 1 Tbsp butter $0.10
- 1 pinch salt $0.05
- 1 pinch black pepper $0.05
- 1 large pizza dough $0.62
- 6 lices provolone cheese $1.23
- 2 oz. pepperoni $0.93, slices
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese $0.95, shredded
Seasoned Oil Topping (optional)
- 1.5 Tbsp olive oil $0.22
- 1.5 Tbsp Parmesan Cheese $0.17, grated
- 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning $0.05
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder $0.03
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400ºF. Slice the mushrooms and mince the garlic.
- Add the mushrooms, butter, and a pinch of salt and pepper to a skillet. Sauté the mushrooms over medium heat until they begin to release their water. Add the minced garlic and continue to sauté until all of the liquid in the skillet has evaporated. Remove the skillet from the heat.
- Roll the pizza dough out to a 10x14 inch rectangle. Top the pizza dough with the sliced provolone, sautéed mushrooms, pepperoni, and mozzarella, leaving about an inch of space around three of the edges and 2-3 inches on one long side.
- Roll the dough up starting on one long side rolling toward the opposite long side. After rolling, keep the seam side down and tuck the ends under to keep the sides closed. Transfer the rolled stromboli to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- In a small bowl, stir together the olive oil, Parmesan, Italian seasoning and garlic powder. Pour the mixture over top of the stromboli, then spread it to cover the surface. Use a sharp knife to cut slits in the top of the dough, about an inch apart.
- Bake for about 25 minutes, or until well browned and the cheese is bubbling through the slits.
- Let it cool slightly before slicing and serving!
Notes
- Homemade or store-bought pizza dough can be used to prepare the stromboli.
