Stuffed Cabbage Casserole Recipe
Description
This Stuffed Cabbage Casserole recipe starts by browning seasoned ground beef in a hot cast iron skillet, crumbling it into chunks for texture. Chopped onions are separately browned in butter until just caramelized, then combined with the beef. Butter is then used to sauté thickly sliced cabbage wedges until wilted and browned, adding a gentle sweetness and depth from caramelization.
The beef and onion mixture is returned to the skillet. Cooked rice and undrained chopped tomatoes are stirred in gently, and the dish is covered and heated through to allow flavors to meld and rice to warm. The tomato juice keeps the casserole moist, while cabbage provides softness and mild sweetness, balancing the savory beef.
This dish can be served as a hearty meal on its own. The skillet method reduces prep time compared to traditional stuffed cabbage rolls while maintaining similar flavors and textures in a simplified form. The caramelized cabbage adds a nuanced flavor and tender bite.
