Sugared Cranberries

Sugared Cranberries are fresh cranberries coated with a simple syrup and then rolled in granulated sugar, resulting in a tart and sweet candy-like fruit. The process involves soaking the berries in syrup to make them sticky, then coating them in sugar for a crystallized, festive appearance and texture. These are ideal for garnishing desserts or enjoying as a sweet snack.

Description

The Sugared Cranberries recipe begins by tossing fresh cranberries in a simple syrup, which is a mixture of sugar dissolved in water, to give them a sticky surface. After 30 minutes in the refrigerator, the berries develop a tacky coating that helps the granulated sugar adhere uniformly. A second coating of sugar provides a crisp, crystallized outer layer.

This coating process transforms the naturally tart cranberries into a sugary treat with a slightly crunchy texture from the sugar crystals. The simple syrup helps to soften the sharpness of raw cranberries, balancing tartness with sweetness.

Sugared cranberries make a colorful garnish for cocktails, desserts, and holiday platters. They can be prepared ahead and refrigerated to maintain freshness. The recipe notes indicate that frozen cranberries can also be used if thawed first, and simple syrup can be homemade or purchased.
