Summer Salad | Classic Caprese Salad
Description
The Summer Salad, a Classic Caprese, centers on ripe heirloom tomatoes sliced into quarter-inch rounds and paired with equally thick slices of fresh mozzarella. Basil leaves are arranged between the layers, lending aromatic freshness. The salad is seasoned lightly with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to enhance natural flavors.
Drizzling the assembled salad with extra virgin olive oil provides a fruity richness, while the balsamic vinegar or glaze adds a touch of acidity and sweetness. The balsamic glaze, thicker and sweeter than vinegar, enriches the flavor profile if used. The combination results in a balanced layering of creamy cheese, juicy tomatoes, fragrant basil, and tangy dressing.
Served immediately, this salad works well as a side dish or light appetizer. It showcases the quality and freshness of its few ingredients and requires minimal preparation. Its Italian inspiration makes it suitable for pairing with grilled meats or crusty bread during warm weather meals.
Ingredients
- 3 medium sized tomato sliced into 1/4" rounds, heirloom
- 12 oz fresh mozzarella sliced into 1/4" rounds
- basil fresh, bunch, leaves
- olive oil extra virgin, for drizzling
- balsamic vinegar or balsamic glaze, for drizzling
Instructions
- Arrange sliced tomatoes and sliced mozzarella on a large plate so that they overlap.
- Tuck the basil leaves in between the layers of tomatoes and Mozzarella, using as much or as little as you'd like. Then, sprinkle a bit of kosher salt and black pepper on top.
- To finish the caprese, drizzle olive oil and balsamic vinegar on top, making sure each slice receives a drizzle. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Using balsamic glaze instead of vinegar provides a thicker texture and sweeter flavor.
- Nutrition information excludes any condiments added to taste.
- For best presentation, slice tomatoes and mozzarella evenly at about 1/4 inch thickness.
- Serve immediately after drizzling to maintain the fresh texture of the ingredients.
