Sun Tea Recipe
Description
The Sun Tea Recipe involves filling a large dispenser with water and placing eight black tea bags inside. The container is covered and left in direct sunlight for 3-4 hours, allowing the tea to infuse slowly at a moderate temperature. This gentle brewing method produces a smooth, mild tea without the need for boiling water.
After steeping, honey is stirred in based on preferred sweetness, and lemon slices may be added for brightness. The tea is chilled in the refrigerator and typically kept for up to five days. Using liquid sweeteners like honey ensures proper dissolution since the water is not boiled.
You can vary the tea types with herbal or blended teas for different flavors and adjust the number of tea bags in proportion to the container volume.
Ingredients
- 1 gallon water
- 8 black tea bags
- 1/4-1/2 cup honey optional
- lemon optional, slices
Instructions
- Fill a large dispenser with the water.
- Add 8 tea bags to the dispenser.
- Cover the dispenser and sit it out in the sun to allow the tea to steep into the water.
- Generally, it will take 3-4 hours for the tea to fully brew but this will depend on how hot it is and how big your dispenser is.
- Then stir in the honey and lemon slices. Add honey based on how sweet you prefer your tea.
- Refrigerate for up to 5 days.
Notes
- This recipe is made with black tea but can use your favorite herbal teas or blends to create different flavors.
- The number of tea bags should scale with the size of your dispenser, for example, 12 tea bags for 1.5 gallons.
- Honey is an optional sweetener and works better than granulated sugar since the tea is brewed without boiling to dissolve the sweetener fully.
