Sweet and Sour Sauce

This Sweet and Sour Sauce blends pineapple juice, brown sugar, rice vinegar, ketchup, and soy sauce into a balanced condiment with a glossy, thickened texture achieved by cornstarch. The sauce delivers a harmonious combination of fruity sweetness and tangy acidity, with an optional touch of red food coloring for vivid appearance. It pairs well with meats, vegetables, and stir-fries.

Description

The Sweet and Sour Sauce recipe starts by combining pineapple juice, packed light brown sugar, rice vinegar, ketchup, and reduced sodium soy sauce in a saucepan. This mixture is brought to a gentle boil, melding the sweet, tart, and savory components. A slurry of cornstarch and cold water is incorporated to thicken the sauce until it can coat the back of a spoon with a smooth, shiny finish. Optional red food coloring may be added for presentation purposes.

This sauce is versatile and typically used to complement a variety of dishes, adding a bright, balanced flavor that enhances proteins or vegetables. Its texture is thick yet pourable, ideal for glazing or dipping.

Once cooled, the sauce can be used immediately or refrigerated for up to three weeks, allowing for convenient preparation ahead of meals. Stirring occasionally when reheating helps maintain an even consistency.
