Sweet and sour sauce
Description
Sweet and sour sauce is made by boiling water, rice wine vinegar, packed brown sugar, ketchup, and low-sodium soy sauce together, creating a balanced blend of sweet and tangy flavors. The sauce is thickened by slowly adding a mixture of cornstarch and water, which is stirred in until it achieves a glossy, smooth consistency.
This sauce can be used immediately as a glaze or dipping sauce for various dishes such as fried or grilled meats, vegetables, or appetizers. It offers a bright, flavorful finish that complements savory foods well.
Leftover sauce can be stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. If it thickens too much upon cooling, reheat gently and add a bit of water to restore the desired consistency before serving.
Ingredients
- ½ cup water
- ¼ cup rice wine vinegar (or substitute apple cider vinegar)
- ⅓ cup light brown sugar packed
- 3 tablespoons ketchup
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce low-sodium
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons water cold
Instructions
- Combine water, vinegar, brown sugar, ketchup and soy sauce in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
- Meanwhile, combine cornstarch and water in a small bowl until well mixed.
- Once the sauce mix has come to a boil, stir in the cornstarch slurry and stir constantly, for about a minute, until the sauce has thickened.
- Remove from heat and use immediately or store in a jar or air-tight container for up to 2 weeks. Reheat and add extra water, as needed, to get it to the right consistency.
