Sweet and Sour Sauce

This sweet and sour sauce combines sugar, apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, and ketchup for a balanced tangy and sweet flavor. Garlic and onion powders add subtle depth, while cornstarch thickens the sauce to a glossy finish. A few drops of red food coloring enhance its traditional appearance.

Description

The Sweet and Sour Sauce recipe mixes granulated sugar, apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and ketchup to create a sauce with both tangy and sweet qualities. The sauce is simmered and then thickened with a cornstarch and water slurry, achieving a smooth, glossy texture. Red food coloring is included to give the sauce its characteristic reddish hue, though this is optional and does not affect flavor.

This versatile sauce can be used immediately or stored refrigerated for up to two weeks. It pairs well with a variety of dishes needing a balance of sweet and tart elements.

The preparation is straightforward, requiring gentle simmering to dissolve the sugar before thickening, making it accessible for home cooks.
