Sweet and Spicy Pretzel Mix

The Sweet and Spicy Pretzel Mix blends pretzel sticks with pecans, almonds, and sesame sticks coated in a spiced butter and brown sugar mixture. Baking this combination creates a crunchy snack mix with sweet, savory, and mildly spicy notes from chipotle powder, garlic powder, and cinnamon. The toasted nuts and seasoned pretzels deliver a satisfying texture and flavor contrast suitable for snacking or party servings.

Description

This recipe combines pretzels, pecans, almonds, and sesame sticks in a large bowl. A saucepan is used to melt butter with brown sugar and spices including garlic powder, chipotle powder, and cinnamon to create a glaze. The warm mixture is poured over the snack components and tossed to coat evenly.

After coating, the mix is spread onto baking sheets and baked at 300°F to toast and caramelize the coating without burning. The gentle heat allows the sugar to melt and bind the spices and butter to the nuts and pretzels, resulting in a glossy and flavorful snack. It can be stirred once during baking for even coloring but is not mandatory.

Once cooled, the mix has a crunchy texture with a balance of sweetness and warmth from the spices. This makes it suitable for storing in airtight containers for about two weeks and serving as a ready-to-eat snack at social gatherings or casual eating.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 cups pretzels thin sticks
  • 1 cup pecan halves
  • 1 cup almonds whole
  • 1 cup sesame sticks any brand
  • 4 Tbsp butter unsalted
  • 4 Tbsp brown sugar packed
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp chipotle powder
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 300F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper (or foil)
  2. Put the pretzels, nuts, and sesame sticks in a large bowl.
  3. Heat the butter, sugar, and spices in a small saucepan until the butter has melted, the sugar has dissolved, and everything is well combined.
  4. Pour over the pretzels etc, and toss very well to get everything evenly coated.
  5. Spread the mix out in a single layer on one or two baking sheets. Bake for about 20-25 minutes, but watch it so it doesn't burn if your oven runs hot. You can give it a stir once during baking if you like, but it's not absolutely necessary.
  6. Let cool before storing. The mix will last up to 2 weeks.
