Sweet and Spicy Pretzel Mix
Description
This recipe combines pretzels, pecans, almonds, and sesame sticks in a large bowl. A saucepan is used to melt butter with brown sugar and spices including garlic powder, chipotle powder, and cinnamon to create a glaze. The warm mixture is poured over the snack components and tossed to coat evenly.
After coating, the mix is spread onto baking sheets and baked at 300°F to toast and caramelize the coating without burning. The gentle heat allows the sugar to melt and bind the spices and butter to the nuts and pretzels, resulting in a glossy and flavorful snack. It can be stirred once during baking for even coloring but is not mandatory.
Once cooled, the mix has a crunchy texture with a balance of sweetness and warmth from the spices. This makes it suitable for storing in airtight containers for about two weeks and serving as a ready-to-eat snack at social gatherings or casual eating.
Ingredients
- 3 cups pretzels thin sticks
- 1 cup pecan halves
- 1 cup almonds whole
- 1 cup sesame sticks any brand
- 4 Tbsp butter unsalted
- 4 Tbsp brown sugar packed
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp chipotle powder
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 300F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper (or foil)
- Put the pretzels, nuts, and sesame sticks in a large bowl.
- Heat the butter, sugar, and spices in a small saucepan until the butter has melted, the sugar has dissolved, and everything is well combined.
- Pour over the pretzels etc, and toss very well to get everything evenly coated.
- Spread the mix out in a single layer on one or two baking sheets. Bake for about 20-25 minutes, but watch it so it doesn't burn if your oven runs hot. You can give it a stir once during baking if you like, but it's not absolutely necessary.
- Let cool before storing. The mix will last up to 2 weeks.
