Sweet Chili Wings Recipe

Sweet Chili Wings Recipe offers crispy air-fried chicken wings coated in a spicy-sweet chili sauce. The wings are coated with a seasoned baking powder mixture to encourage crisping in the air fryer. The accompanying sauce blends Thai sweet chili sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, red pepper flakes, black pepper, garlic, soy sauce, and a cornstarch slurry for thickness. This technique creates wings with a crisp exterior covered in a sticky, flavorful sauce, suitable for snack or meal serving.

Description

This recipe first dries and powders chicken wings with baking powder, garlic, onion powder, salt, and pepper to promote a crispy skin after air frying. They are cooked in batches at 350°F, turning halfway to develop an even golden brown crust. The sauce is made simultaneously by heating Thai sweet chili sauce with brown sugar, sesame oil, red pepper flakes, black pepper, garlic, soy sauce, and water. Adding a cornstarch-water mixture thickens the sauce for coating.

Once the wings are cooked crisp, they are tossed in the glossy, tangy, and mildly spicy sauce. The combination of a crunchy exterior and a sticky, flavorful glaze delivers a balanced texture and taste. This recipe also includes instructions for oven baking to achieve similar results with subsequent broiling for sauce adherence.

The wings work well as an appetizer or main dish, pairing nicely with plain sides or dipping sauces. The recipe’s flexibility in cooking method makes it accessible to air fryer and oven users alike.

Ingredients

Servings

Wings

  • 1 pounds chicken wing
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

Sauce

  • 1/2 cup Thai sweet chili sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar or honey
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 cloves garlic (2 tablespoons garlic)
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons of water

Instructions

  1. Preheat the air fryer for 5 minutes at 350 degrees F.
  2. If the wings aren't separated into wing and drumette then cut them apart. Pat them dry so they crisp instead of steam.
  3. In a medium bowl mix the baking powder, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper. Add the chicken wing and drumette pieces and toss them until they are completely coated with the mixture. You can also put everything in a zipper bag and toss them around to coat them.
  4. Put each wing in the preheated air fryer basket. Cook at 350 degrees F for 10 minutes on one side then turn them over and cook for another 7-8 minutes or until golden brown. Don't overcrowd the basket and cook in batches if you need to.
  5. While these cook combine the sweet chili sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, red pepper flakes, black pepper, garlic, soy sauce and water in a small sauce pan. Heat on medium heat until the sugar dissolves.
  6. Stir in the cornstarch and water mixture. Let it cook on low heat until it thickens and becomes a little sticky. Take if off the heat.
  7. When the chicken wings are done let them sit for about 5 minutes. Then toss them in the sauce.
  8. Put the coated wings back in the air fryer so they are glazed with the sauce. Use parchment paper in the air fryer to make cleanup easier! Cook them at 400 degrees F for 3 minutes so they are crispy and delicious.
  9. To serve garnish with cilantro, sesame seeds or green onions.

Notes

  • For oven cooking, bake wings at 425°F for 20 minutes, flip, and bake another 20 minutes.
  • After baking, toss wings with sweet chili sauce and broil for 3-5 minutes to set the glaze.
