Sweet Potato Fries Dip

This recipe features oven-roasted sweet potato fries paired with a chipotle lime mayonnaise dip. The fries are cut into long sticks, coated lightly in vegetable oil, and baked until browned and crisp on the outside. The accompanying dip combines mayonnaise with lime juice and a blend of smoky and spicy spices, prepared ahead to meld flavors. This pairing highlights a balance of sweet, savory, and smoky notes ideal for a snack or side dish.

Description

Sweet Potato Fries Dip offers tender yet slightly crisp oven-baked fries made from sweet potatoes coated lightly with vegetable oil and seasoned with kosher salt. The fries roast at 400°F and are turned regularly to achieve even browning without deep frying.

The chipotle lime dip blends mayonnaise with lime juice and a combination of chipotle powder, chili powder, paprika, cumin, and garlic powder. It should be mixed at least an hour before serving to allow the spices to develop fullness. This cool, creamy dip complements the natural sweetness of the fries with smoky and spicy undertones.

Serve the fries hot alongside the chilled dip for contrast. This snack works well as an appetizer or accompaniment for grilled meats or sandwiches.

The dip can be refrigerated for up to one week, covered tightly to prevent drying out.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 sweet potato or yams
  • 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
  • kosher salt

For the Dip:

  • 1 1/4 cups mayonnaise
  • 1/2 lime juiced
  • 1 teaspoon chipotle powder ground
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Mix up the chipotle lime dip at least an hour before serving so the spices have a chance to blend together: in a small bowl, mix all the ingredients together and refrigerate.
  2. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Cut the sweet potatoes into long sticks and place them in a large Ziploc bag. Add just enough vegetable oil to lightly coat the potatoes, seal the bag and toss to distribute the oil evenly.
  3. Evenly layer the potatoes onto a cookie sheet. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, turning often until lightly browned. Remove from oven and sprinkle on Kosher salt, to taste.
  4. Serve with the chipotle lime dip.

Notes

  • Prepare the chipotle lime dip at least one hour before serving to allow the spice flavors to meld effectively.
  • Keep the dip covered in the refrigerator; it will keep up to one week.
