Sweet Salsa Verde (Green Salsa)
Description
Sweet Salsa Verde starts with canned whole tomatillos and some of their juice, which provide the central tart and tangy base. A bunch of fresh cilantro leaves adds herbal brightness, and jalapeño slices contribute mild heat that can be increased by including seeds and ribs. Sugar balances the natural acidity and spice with sweetness, and garlic salt adds savory depth and enhances overall flavor.
All ingredients are combined in a blender or food processor and pureed until smooth. The resulting salsa is vibrant green, with a velvety texture suitable for dipping, spreading, or topping. Refrigerating after blending allows flavors to meld and the salsa to chill, which can soften sharpness from raw ingredients.
The level of heat can be controlled by adjusting the amount of jalapeño or leaving out seeds and ribs for a milder salsa. The sugar amount can also be reduced if less sweetness is preferred. This salsa pairs well with tortilla chips or as a zesty complement to grilled meats or vegetables.
Ingredients
- (1) ounce can tomatillo suggest La Costena brand, whole
- 1 bunch cilantro (remove stems)
- 1 jalapeño (sliced or 8 jalapeno slices from jarred jalapenos)
- 1/2 cup sugar (may use 1/3 cup if you want it less sweet)
- 1 teaspoon garlic salt
Instructions
- In a blender or food processor, add canned whole tomatillos and 1/2 cup of the juice from the can. Add cilantro leaves, jalapeno, sugar, and garlic salt. If you want a spicier salsa, leave in the seeds and center rib.
- Blend for 20 seconds or until it is smooth. Place in a jar and refrigerate until ready to serve. Serve with chips.
