Taco Puff Pastry Pizza
Description
This Taco Puff Pastry Pizza uses a thawed sheet of puff pastry as the base, pierced lightly to prevent excessive rising. The topping starts with ground beef or turkey cooked with a blend of cumin, smoked paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, salt, and freshly cracked black pepper, creating a richly spiced meat layer. Before adding the meat, a layer of refried beans is spread onto the pastry, followed by a coating of grated sharp white cheddar cheese. The spiced meat is spread evenly on top of the cheese, with care taken not to pile it too thickly to allow the pastry to bake through. The pizza is baked at 425°F until the edges are golden brown and puffed.
After baking, it is finished with fresh toppings: shredded lettuce, chopped cherry tomatoes, pickled onions, and crumbled cotija cheese for a mix of fresh, tangy, and creamy textures. Additional taco sauce or salsa can be drizzled on top to add moisture and flavor contrast. The combination of flaky pastry crust, creamy beans, melty cheese, spiced meat, and fresh toppings offers a diverse taste and texture experience reminiscent of tacos but in a convenient pizza form.
Ingredients
- 1 puff pastry thawed if frozen, sheet
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- ½ pound ground beef lean, or ground turkey
- 1 teaspoons cumin ground
- 1 teaspoons smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper freshly cracked
- 1 cup refried beans
- 1 cup cheddar cheese freshly grated, sharp, white
- ¼ cup taco sauce plus more for drizzling, or salsa
- 1 cup cherry tomatoes chopped
- 1 cup lettuce shredded
- ¼ cup cotija cheese crumbled
- onion for topping, pickled
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Spray a baking sheet with nonstick spray. Place the sheet of puff pastry on the baking sheet. Pierce the pastry a few times all over with a fork.
- Heat the oil in a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add in the ground turkey, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Season it with the cumin, paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Stir well, continuing to break apart the meat into small crumbles. Cook until the turkey has browned completely. Turn off the heat.
- Spread the refried beans on the puff pastry, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges. Top with the grated cheddar cheese. Top with the taco meat, making sure it’s evenly distributed over the pastry. Don’t pile it in the center or it won’t bake through! Drizzle with the taco sauce/salsa.
- Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the pastry is golden brown on the edges and puffed.
- Once done, add your toppings! Shredded lettuce, tomatoes, pickled onions and cotija cheese. Drizzle on extra taco sauce or salsa if you’d like! Slice and serve!
- Note: since this is puff pastry, it’s best served right after you make it. If you have leftovers, you can reheat in a low oven (300 degrees F) for a few minutes until warm.
