Taco Seasoning
Description
The Taco Seasoning combines dried spices to create a balanced savory blend with warmth from cumin and paprika complemented by oregano's herbal undertone. Chili powder adds a mild heat that can be adjusted to taste, while garlic and onion powders provide depth without moisture. Salt and black pepper round out the flavor profile.
Once mixed, this seasoning can be stored in an airtight container for convenience. It is intended to flavor about 1 pound of ground meat when combined with water, tomato paste, and diced onion. This lets you make homemade taco filling without relying on pre-packaged mixes.
A notable point is the recommendation to use pure ground chili rather than American chili powder, which is a blended spice mix varying in flavor across brands. Replacing with cayenne pepper is suggested if pure ground chili is unavailable, helping ensure consistent heat and taste.
Ingredients
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp oregano dried
- 2 tsp cumin powder
- 2 tsp paprika
- 1/4 tsp chilli powder (adjust spiciness to taste)
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
Instructions
- Combine ingredients.
- Store in an airtight container.
- Makes 2.5 tablespoons. Combine with 1lbs/500g mince meat, 1/2 cup water, 1 diced onion and 2 tablespoons of tomato paste.
Notes
- Use pure ground chili powder instead of American chili powder for consistent flavor; cayenne pepper can substitute if unavailable.
- Store the combined seasoning in an airtight container for future use.
- Add this seasoning to about 1 pound of ground meat with water, onion, and tomato paste to make taco filling.
