Taco Wontons

Taco Wontons combine seasoned cooked ground beef with shredded cheese wrapped in wonton wrappers, sealed with an egg wash, and deep-fried until golden and crisp. The hot, crispy pockets are commonly served with salsa and sour cream for dipping. This preparation offers a savory finger food featuring familiar taco flavors in a crunchy fried wonton form, suitable as appetizers or snack bites.

Description

The recipe begins by cooking ground beef thoroughly, seasoning it with taco seasoning mix for a pronounced southwest flavor. An egg wash made from egg and water helps seal the wonton wrappers when filled with the cooked meat and shredded cheese. Each wonton is folded and pressed tightly to prevent filling leakage during frying.

The wontons are deep-fried in hot vegetable oil heated to 350°F until they turn golden brown and float, cues that indicate they are cooked through and crispy. The result is a crunchy exterior encasing a seasoned meat and melted cheese filling, offering a texture contrast and rich, savory taste reminiscent of tacos.

Taco wontons can be served with various condiments such as salsa and sour cream to complement the flavors and add moisture. They also can be used as a base for layered nacho-style dishes by topping with shredded cheese and baking until melted.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 tablespoons taco seasoning mix
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 package wonton wrapper
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup cheese shredded
  • 1 cup salsa
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • vegetable oil fry frying

Instructions

  1. Cook ground meat until done, add taco seasoning mix. Prepare an egg wash by combining 1 egg and 1 tablespoon of water in a small dish and whisk together well. In a large pot heat oil to 350 degrees.
  2. You can use a smaller pot and save on oil as well. I sometimes don't even bother with a deep fryer, I grab a 3 or 4-quart pot, add oil, fry in a normal everyday pot.
  3. To assemble the wontons take 1 wonton wrapper, about 2 teaspoons of ground meat and place into the wonton, fold the wonton wrapper over, brush the edges of the wonton with the egg wash, and fold over the wonton. Deep fry until golden and they float.
  4. The best judge for deep frying is the color and the fact that it is floating in the oil. Serve up your taco wontons with condiments that you enjoy. Shredded cheese over these and popping them into the oven and turning them into nachos is very popular at my house. So is dipping them into your favorite toppings.
