Tartar Sauce Recipe
Description
The Tartar Sauce Recipe combines classic ingredients like mayonnaise and fresh lemon juice with homemade finely chopped dill pickles and dill weed for a balanced creamy and tangy flavor. Black pepper and Worcestershire sauce add a subtle depth without dominating the sauce. The preparation involves mixing all ingredients and refrigerating for at least an hour to allow the flavors to develop. Fresh lemon juice brightens the sauce, and freshly chopped pickles give texture that distinguishes it from using pre-made relish. Dill provides a mild herbal note that complements seafood dishes well.
The sauce's creamy yet zesty profile makes it a natural pairing for fried or grilled seafood, providing moisture and contrast without overpowering delicate flavors. It works well as a dip for fish sticks, crab cakes, or as a sandwich spread. The texture is smooth with small pickle pieces for a pleasant bite.
To get the best flavor, use fresh squeezed lemon juice and finely chop your own dill pickles rather than relying on relish. Fresh dill weed is recommended for optimal taste, though dried dill can be used if crushed before adding. A good quality mayonnaise significantly influences the final flavor. The sauce keeps its best freshness when chilled and served within a few days.
Ingredients
- 1 cup mayonnaise Best Foods or Hellmann's
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice (juicing a real lemon tastes best)
- 2 to 3 tablespoons dill pickle finely chopped
- 2 teaspoons dill weed finely chopped
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 dash Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
- In a medium size bowl, combine mayo, lemon juice, chopped dill pickles and dill weed, Worcestershire sauce, and pepper.
- Stir until thoroughly combined. Chill in refrigerator for at least 1 hour. The longer, the better. Flavors will get stronger with more time.
- Stir before serving. Great as a dip or dressing with seafood!
Notes
- Use freshly squeezed lemon juice for a brighter, fresher taste; warming the lemon briefly in the microwave and rolling it before juicing helps extract more juice.
- Finely chop your own dill pickles instead of using dill pickle relish for a better texture and flavor.
- Fresh dill weed is preferred as it has a more vibrant flavor; if using dried dill, crush it between your fingers to release aroma before adding.
- Use a high-quality mayonnaise like Best Foods or Hellmann's to improve the sauce's flavor.
