Teriyaki Salmon
Description
Teriyaki Salmon offers a flavorful way to prepare salmon fillets by coating them in a tangy-sweet teriyaki sauce. The sauce combines low-sodium soy sauce, honey, brown sugar, fresh minced garlic and ginger, along with lemon juice for brightness. After mixing and thickening the sauce with cornstarch, the salmon is placed in a baking dish and baked at 400 degrees until cooked through, usually 12 to 15 minutes depending on thickness. This cooking approach allows the sauce to penetrate the fish, producing moist salmon with a glossy, sticky glaze.
The texture of the cooked salmon is tender and flaky, while the teriyaki sauce adds a savory and slightly sweet profile with subtle citrus notes. The use of freshly minced garlic and ginger provides aromatic depth that complements the fish well. Green onions and sesame seeds are suggested garnishes to lend a fresh and nutty finish.
To serve, spoon some of the extra sauce from the baking dish over the salmon and consider pairing it with simple sides such as steamed or roasted vegetables like asparagus or broccoli, which can also be drizzled with the remaining sauce for added flavor.
Ingredients
- 4 salmon fillet skinless
- 1 green onion chopped (optional
- 1/2 tsp sesame seeds for serving (optional
Teriyaki Sauce
- 6 - 8 Tbsp soy sauce depending on how salty you like it, low-sodium
- 8 Tbsp water divided
- 3 Tbsp honey
- 2 Tbsp light brown sugar packed
- 1 Tbsp garlic 3 cloves, minced
- 1 Tbsp ginger minced, peeled, fresh
- 1 1/2 Tbsp lemon juice fresh
- 1 Tbsp cornstarch
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees and spray a baking dish* with non-stick cooking spray.
- In a small saucepan whisk together low-sodium soy sauce, 6 Tbsp water, honey, brown sugar, garlic, ginger and lemon juice and bring mixture to a light boil over medium heat.
- Whisk together cornstarch with remaining 2 Tbsp water, then add to sauce mixture in saucepan.
- Let mixture boil, whisking constantly, for 1 minute. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- Place salmon in baking dish then pour teriyaki sauce evenly over salmon (I also like to lift the fillets up so the sauce runs right under).
- Bake in preheated oven 12 - 15 minutes until salmon has cooked through (cooked time will vary depending on thickness of salmon).
- Serve warm topped with some of the teriyaki sauce from the baking dish (use excess sauce for steamed asparagus or broccoli on the side) and chopped green onions and sesame seeds.
- *I recommend using a baking dish that's just large enough to fit salmon while leaving a little space between fillets.
