Teriyaki Turkey Burgers with Grilled Pineapple

Teriyaki Turkey Burgers with Grilled Pineapple combine seasoned ground turkey patties brushed and basted with teriyaki sauce, grilled alongside sweet pineapple slices. The grilled pineapple adds a caramelized, juicy contrast to the savory, moist turkey burgers. Served on buns with toppings like lettuce and Swiss cheese, these burgers offer a flavorful twist on classic grilled sandwiches.

Description

This recipe mixes ground turkey with egg, panko bread crumbs, grated onion, teriyaki sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper to create flavorful patties. The turkey mixture is shaped into six half-inch thick burgers and grilled over medium to medium-high heat. Basting with teriyaki sauce during grilling enhances the glaze and taste.

The pineapple is cored and sliced into rings, then grilled until caramelized and tender, which complements the turkey’s savory flavor. Optional Swiss cheese and lettuce can be added to the buns for texture and creaminess. The burgers are cooked to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit for safety and juiciness.

The result is a juicy turkey burger with a sweet and tangy teriyaki glaze paired with warm, grilled pineapple slices. This pairing brings a balance of sweet and savory flavors, making a satisfying meal for backyard grilling or casual dinners.

Choosing 85% lean ground turkey helps the patties hold together and stay moist. You can use fresh pineapple for grilling, or canned pineapple rinsed and patted dry, though fresh is recommended. The recipe yields six burgers, but portions can be adjusted as needed.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 pounds ground turkey see note
  • 1 egg large
  • ½ cup bread crumbs I use panko, unseasoned
  • ¼ cup onion grated
  • ¼ cup teriyaki sauce see note
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt I use coarse, kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper I use coarsely ground
  • 6 pineapple cored (see note for canned, rings, sliced fresh
  • Hamburger Bun
  • lettuce
  • teriyaki sauce additional
  • swiss cheese optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat a grill to medium or medium high (I set my pellet grill to 375 degrees F).
  2. In a large bowl, add the ground turkey, egg, bread crumbs, onion, teriyaki sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Combine well (I dig in with my hands until it's evenly combined).
  3. Form six burgers (or more, see note below) about 1/2-inch thick.
  4. If meat tends to stick to the grates of your grill, brush the grates with oil or lightly brush both sides of the turkey burgers with oil.
  5. Grill the burgers about six minutes on the first side, flip, baste with teriyaki sauce and grill another 4-6 minutes until cooked through (instant read thermometer registers 165 degrees F).
  6. Once the burgers are flipped, add the pineapple to the grill and grill 4-5 minutes, flipping once. Optional: brush pineapple with teriyaki sauce during last few minutes of grilling.
  7. Serve the turkey burgers on buns with additional teriyaki sauce, lettuce and Swiss cheese (optional). Burgers are delicious served without a bun, too.

Notes

  • 85% lean ground turkey is preferred for texture and moisture; avoid turkey in tubes that can be mushy.
  • Use your favorite teriyaki sauce brand, or try homemade versions for different flavors.
  • Fresh pineapple is recommended for grilling; canned pineapple can be used but requires careful handling as it is more fragile.
  • This recipe yields six moderately sized burgers; adjust portion sizes to serve more or fewer guests.
  • Nutrition information covers patties and pineapple only, not buns or additional toppings.
