Texas Roadhouse Rolls

These Texas Roadhouse-style rolls are soft, slightly sweet dinner rolls with a tender crumb made from a dough enriched with butter and egg. The dough is proofed twice to develop flavor and texture before baking to a light golden brown. They are traditionally served warm with honey cinnamon butter, which adds a sweet and spiced finish that complements the rich rolls.

Description

Texas Roadhouse Rolls begin with warm milk and yeast to activate fermentation, mixed with flour, egg, melted butter, sugar, and salt to form a slightly sticky dough. After a first rise, the dough is rolled out and cut into portions before a second rise on a baking sheet. Baking at 375 degrees yields rolls with a soft interior and golden crust. The accompanying honey cinnamon butter, made from softened salted butter, cinnamon, honey, and powdered sugar, creates a textured and sweet spread for serving.

The rolls have a rich but balanced sweetness from sugar and butter, enhanced by the gentle cinnamon and honey notes in the butter. Their tender texture and mild sweetness make them well matched with soups, stews, or enjoyed on their own as a warm bread alongside a meal.

Careful attention to proofing, dough hydration, and baking time ensures soft rolls. Using real butter rather than margarine and proofing yeast in warm milk contributes to the authentic flavor and texture of these rolls.

Ingredients

Servings

Roll Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk warm 100 degrees
  • 1 1/8 teaspoon active yeast or 1 package
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour plus more for kneading
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup butter melted plus 1/4 cup butter, melted (optional) (unsalted is best, salted butter is fine to use
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Honey Cinnamon Butter

  • 1/2 cup butter softened, salted
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar

Instructions

Roll directions

  1. In a cup or small bowl, stir together the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Allow the yeast to proof and begin to activate while you prepare the other ingredients. (This is not necessary, but I prefer this to use milk cold out of the refrigerator).
  2. Using a stand mixer or food processor, combine the flour, egg, 1/3 cup melted butter, and salt. Add the milk mixture and process until you have a smooth dough; it will be stickier and wetter than regular bread dough. Place the dough in a greased bowl, turn the dough to grease all sides, and cover with a towel. Let rise until it has doubled in size.
  3. When the dough has doubled, punch it down and turn it out on a floured board. Let rest for 10 minutes.
  4. Roll out the dough into a large, flat rectangle approximately 1/2 inch thick. Cut into 16 portions with a sharp knife and place on a greased baking sheet and let rise again, until doubled.
  5. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Bake the rolls for 10 minutes on the greased baking sheet. They will be light brown when removed from the oven. If desired you can brush the tops of the rolls with the remaining 1/4 cup melted the butter before serving.

Honey Butter directions

  1.  Prepare honey cinnamon butter by combining butter, cinnamon, honey, and powdered sugar with a mixer until well blended.

Notes

  • Use regular white sugar for proper flavor development.
  • Warm milk between 110-115°F activates the yeast and enriches the dough.
  • Saf-instant Gold Instant Yeast is recommended for enhanced flavor, though regular bread yeast works.
  • Mix ingredients and knead using a bread machine or stand mixer for convenience.
  • Do not add extra flour; the dough should remain slightly sticky.
  • Let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free environment for best results.
  • Bake rolls until they develop a light golden crust, avoiding overbaking.
