Thai Basil Pesto

This Thai Basil Pesto mixes fresh Thai basil, pine nuts or walnuts, garlic, lemon or lime juice, and olive oil to create a vibrant sauce with a tangy herbal flavor. Parmesan cheese is optional for added richness. The ingredients are finely chopped and emulsified in a food processor, producing a smooth, slightly textured pesto for use in various dishes.

Description

The Thai Basil Pesto combines the fragrant, anise-like notes of Thai basil with the nuttiness of toasted pine nuts or walnuts. The garlic and citrus juice add sharpness and brightness, while olive oil turns the mixture into a smooth and emulsified sauce. Parmesan cheese, if used, enriches the pesto with a savory depth. The preparation involves pulsing ingredients in a food processor and slowly incorporating olive oil to ensure a good texture that stays combined.

This versatile pesto can enhance noodles, grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or be used as a spread or dip. Its fresh herbal flavor contrasts well with mild or rich dishes.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 cups Thai basil
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice or lime juice, fresh
  • cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • cup pine nut or walnuts, toasted
  • ¼ cup Parmesan Cheese optional, freshly grated
  • salt
  • black pepper

Instructions

  1. Chop the pine nuts: In a food processor, combine the pine nuts, lemon juice, garlic, salt, and pepper and pulse until well chopped.
  2. Add the Thai basil and Parmesan cheese: Add the Thai basil and pulse several times more. Scrape down the sides of the food processor with a rubber spatula. Add the parmesan cheese and pulse.
  3. Slowly pour in the olive oil: With the food processor running, drizzle in the olive oil and pulse until combined. Adding the olive oil slowly while the processor is running will help it emulsify and help keep the olive oil from separating.
  4. Season the pesto sauce: Add salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
