The Best Cinnamon Toast

The Best Cinnamon Toast uses sandwich bread spread generously with a cinnamon-sugar butter mixed with vanilla extract, baked until crisp and bubbly. This toasty treat offers a warm cinnamon sweetness with a slightly crunchy texture from baking and broiling, bringing a lively twist to a traditional comfort breakfast or snack.

Description

This recipe transforms ordinary sliced sandwich bread into flavorful cinnamon toast by spreading each slice evenly with a blend of softened salted butter, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and vanilla extract. The mixture creates a sweet and aromatic cinnamon butter that deeply flavors the toast.

The bread is baked initially at 350°F until it is lightly crisped, then finished under the broiler briefly to bubble the cinnamon and sugar topping, adding a slightly caramelized texture and intensified aroma. Careful attention during broiling prevents burning and ensures an even golden finish.

Serve this cinnamon toast warm or slightly cooled as a classic breakfast or a sweet snack. The recipe notes that a variety of sandwich breads are suitable, with wheat bread offering a heartier texture. Adding table salt is recommended if using unsalted butter to balance sweetness.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 lices sandwich bread
  • 1/4 cup salted butter softened, 56g
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar 50g
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Place your bread on a broiler-safe ungreased, unlined baking sheet.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine softened butter, sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla. Use a fork to stir until the mixture forms a paste that is uniform in color.
  3. Divide the cinnamon butter mixture evenly between the pieces of bread and spread it over the slices from edge to edge, completely covering each piece.
  4. Place baking sheet on the top or center rack of your oven (you want it in the top half of your oven, but at least 5 inches from the broiler so your bread doesn’t burn). Bake for 10 minutes or until bread is lightly crispy.
  5. Turn the broiler on high and broil toast until cinnamon sugar is bubbling, 1 to 2 minutes. If at any time the edges of your toast begin to burn, pull them out of the oven. DO NOT walk away from your toast under the broiler and watch it closely.
  6. Allow the toast to cool slightly, slice, and enjoy!

Notes

  • If using unsalted butter, add 1/8 teaspoon table salt with the sugar and cinnamon for balanced flavor.
  • Almost any sandwich bread works well, but hearty wheat bread adds extra texture and flavor.
