The Best Frozen Hot Chocolate
Description
The recipe calls for combining heavy cream, whole milk, hot chocolate mix, chocolate syrup, powdered sugar, and ice in a blender until the mixture reaches a thick, textured consistency similar to a milkshake rather than a smooth smoothie. This combination yields a rich chocolate flavor with creamy texture and sweetness balanced by the powders and syrups. Whipped cream is added as a topping to enhance the drink’s decadence and mouthfeel.
This frozen hot chocolate is served immediately for best texture. Alternatively, it can be prepared ahead and frozen without the whipped cream, then thawed at room temperature or outdoors before serving. It retains flavor and texture well after thawing, making it convenient for advance preparation.
The use of heavy whipping cream contributes full flavor and richness, though milk or half-and-half can be substituted with some loss of creaminess. Chocolate syrup provides a deep chocolate taste complementing the hot chocolate mix powder. Serving the drink with some headroom in the glass allows for a generous topping of whipped cream, which pairs especially well with the chilled chocolate base.
Ingredients
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup milk whole
- ¾ cup hot chocolate mix powdered
- ¼ cup chocolate syrup
- ¼ cup powdered sugar
- 5 cups ice
- Whipped Cream for topping
Instructions
- Add all of the ingredients other than the whipped cream into a blender and pulse until the ingredients are blended to your desired consistency. You want it to be a little thicker with texture, like a milkshake, rather than completely smooth like a smoothie.
- Pour equally into four glasses. Top with whipped cream and sprinkles (if desired).
- Serve immediately.
Notes
- You can prepare the drink ahead of time (without whipped cream) and freeze it; allow to thaw at room temperature or outside before serving.
- Fill glasses to about three-quarters full to leave room for whipped cream topping.
- Heavy whipping cream gives a richer flavor but milk or half-and-half can be used if preferred.
- If you do not have both milk and chocolate syrup, using chocolate milk as a substitute offers similar flavor.
