The Best Guacamole
Description
This guacamole recipe starts by mashing semi-ripe Hass avocados with fresh lime juice to prevent browning and add brightness. Chopped red onion, seeded and drained cherry tomatoes, cilantro, minced jalapeño, cumin, garlic powder, and kosher salt are gently folded in for balanced flavor and texture.
The guacamole remains slightly chunky, with creamy avocado complemented by the crispness of tomatoes and onion, the heat of jalapeño, and aromatic cumin. The lime juice also acts as a natural preservative, keeping the mixture fresh longer.
Serving the guacamole immediately with tortilla chips highlights its creamy texture and refreshing flavors, or it can be used as a condiment for Mexican dishes. To keep it fresh when not serving right away, it's carefully packed in a container with a minimal air layer and sealed tightly to reduce oxidation.
Replacing garlic powder with fresh minced garlic is possible, as is adjusting the heat level by including jalapeño seeds. Selecting sweeter white onions over red will mellow the sharpness if desired.
Ingredients
- 6 large avocado semi-ripe, Hass variety
- lime fresh, juice of 2 large
- 1 small red onion chopped
- ½ cup cherry tomato chopped and seeded/drained
- ¼ cup cilantro freshly chopped
- 1 medium jalapeno pepper seeded and minced
- ½ tsp cumin ground
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- ¾ tsp kosher salt
Instructions
- Halve avocados, remove the seeds, and scoop flesh into a large bowl. Roughly mash with a fork, leaving some chunky bits. Immediately fold in lime juice, using a spoon or rubber spatula.
- Gently fold in all remaining ingredients by hand, until combined. If serving immediately transfer guacamole to serving bowl and serve with tortilla chips.
- If not serving immediately: transfer guacamole to a clear container with lid. Gently tap down the container, to pack down the guacamole and remove as many air pockets as possible. Add a very thin layer of lime/lemon juice (or water) over the guacamole, and place cling wrap flush over the top to form an airtight seal. Cover and chill until ready to serve.
Notes
- Fresh garlic cloves can substitute garlic powder for a more pronounced garlic flavor.
- Cumin adds a fragrant note uncommon in guacamole but pairs well with avocado and lime.
- Cherry tomatoes are preferred for their sweetness but grape tomatoes work as well.
- Using white onions instead of red will create a milder onion taste.
- Including jalapeño seeds increases heat intensity if additional spiciness is desired.
- To keep guacamole fresh and green, minimize oxygen exposure by sealing tightly with layering lime or lemon juice on top.
- Refer to specific avocado buying and storage tips to ensure quality and ripeness.
