The Best Pineapple Casserole Recipe
Description
This pineapple casserole starts with mixing white and brown sugar, flour, and optional nutmeg with grated sharp cheddar cheese. Canned pineapple chunks are drained well and combined with the reserved pineapple juice before adding to the cheese mixture. The blend of cheese and pineapple offers a contrast of savory and sweet flavors. The casserole is baked in a butter-greased dish topped with a crumb mixture made from cracker crumbs and melted butter, which becomes golden and crisp during baking.
The cooking temperature is moderate at 350°F, allowing the pineapple to meld with the cheese and sugars while the crumb topping crisps. The casserole offers a mixture of textures: creamy and cheesy with juicy pineapple chunks, contrasted by the crunchy crumb layer. It works well as a side dish that complements both savory and sweet courses.
Serving warm brings out the cheddar's richness and pineapple's juiciness. It pairs well with main dishes that benefit from a sweet-savory component. The use of common pantry ingredients like canned pineapple and crackers makes it accessible. Optional nutmeg adds subtle spice but can be omitted if undesired.
