The Best Scalloped Potatoes Recipe
Description
This recipe begins by sautéing diced onions in melted butter until translucent, forming the flavorful base for the sauce. Flour is added and cooked briefly to remove raw taste before whisking in milk to create a smooth cream sauce. Salt and black pepper season the sauce.
Peeled, thinly sliced potatoes are arranged evenly in a baking dish, then covered with the cream sauce. Shredded cheese is sprinkled on top, and the dish is first covered to let the potatoes steam and partially cook. After 30 minutes, the cover is removed to allow the cheese to brown and the sauce to thicken as the potatoes finish cooking.
The final dish features tender potatoes coated in a creamy sauce with a slightly crisp, golden cheese topping. It serves well as a side dish accompanying meat or vegetable entrees.
Ingredients
- 6 potato medium
- 1 onion diced, medium
- 3 tbsp butter unsalted
- 1/4 cup flour
- 2 cups milk
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper ground
- 1 cup cheese Mozzarella, cheddar or Mexican, shredded
Instructions
- In a deep pan, melt the butter and add in the diced onion. Sauté the onion on low heat until transluscent.
- Add in the flour to the pan and sauté it for about a minute to cook out the raw taste. Add in the milk and whisk until smooth.
- Season the cream sauce with salt and pepper. Set it aside.
- Peel and slice the potatoes. Assemble them in a 9x13 in. baking dish (or round 10 in. pan), using a scalloped pattern.
- Pour the sauce over the potatoes.
- Top the potatoes with cheese and cover the baking dish with a lid or some foil. Bake the potatoes at 400°F for 30 minutes.
- Remove the lid or foil and bake the potatoes for another 30 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is lightly golden brown. Dig in and enjoy!
