The Best Sourdough Cinnamon Rolls

The Best Sourdough Cinnamon Rolls feature a tender, flavorful dough made with sourdough starter, milk, eggs, butter, and flour, filled with a cinnamon-sugar butter spread, and topped with a rich cream cheese icing. The combination of sourdough fermentation and traditional baking creates soft yet satisfying rolls with a balanced sweet and tangy profile.

Description

This recipe starts by combining sourdough starter with warm milk and eggs to form the dough base, which is enriched with butter, sugar, and salt. After initial mixing and resting, the dough is kneaded and allowed to rise slowly for several hours to develop flavor and texture. The filling blends butter, sugar, and cinnamon, spread evenly over the rolled-out dough before tightly rolling and slicing into individual rolls.

The rolls are baked until golden brown with a tender crumb and a slight chew from the sourdough fermentation. After baking, a cream cheese-based icing flavored with vanilla and powdered sugar is generously spread over the warm rolls, adding a smooth, sweet, and tangy finish that complements the cinnamon filling.

These cinnamon rolls are ideal for breakfast, brunch, or a sweet treat. The sourdough starter adds depth of flavor and a subtle tang that sets them apart from standard cinnamon rolls. Serve warm to enjoy the full contrast of warm dough and creamy icing.
