The Best Turkey Burgers
Description
This turkey burger recipe uses 85% lean ground turkey mixed with buttered cracker crumbs and an egg to bind and add moisture, along with chives and seasoned salt for seasoning. Forming the patties with a thumb indentation prevents puffing up during cooking and promotes even thickness. Cooking on a medium heat grill ensures thorough cooking to a safe temperature while maintaining juiciness.
Butter is spread on the burger buns and toasted briefly on the grill to add flavor and texture, creating a contrast with the tender turkey patties. Assembly is customizable with common toppings like cheese slices, fresh tomato, onion, crisp lettuce, avocado slices, and mayonnaise, adding layers of flavor and texture.
These burgers can be a satisfying main course served with typical condiments and sides. Alternatively, they can be cooked by stovetop or air fryer, with air frying suggested at 360°F for 7 minutes per side as an option.
The use of softened butter, choice of crackers, and lean turkey help maintain moisture and flavor in the finished burgers.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground turkey 85% lean
- 1 cup cracker crumbs such as Ritz crackers, butter
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon chives chopped
- 2 teaspoons seasoned salt
- 4 burger buns
- 4 tablespoons butter softened
- cheese if desired
- tomato red onion, for topping
- onion
- lettuce
- avocado
- mayonnaise
Instructions
- Preheat the grill to 350 degrees over medium heat.
- Add the ground turkey, cracker crumbs, egg, chives, and seasoned salt to a mixing bowl and use your hands to combine the mixture. Shape into 4 patties and lightly press your thumb into the center of each patty to form an indent. This will help the patties hold their shape as they cook.
- Place on the grill and cook for 6 minutes per side or until they reach a safe internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Remove from the grill and place on a plate and cover tightly with foil while you grill the buns.
- Spread the buns with butter and place butter side down on the hot grill. Grill for 2 minutes, or until lightly toasted.
- Assemble the burgers and top with your favorite toppings.
Notes
- Any type of cracker can be used for the crumbs, such as Saltines or Cheez-Its, which will alter the flavor slightly.
- Using 85% lean ground turkey balances moisture and fat for juicier burgers; leaner turkey may require adding a drizzle of olive oil to the mixture.
- Burgers can be cooked on the stovetop or in an air fryer as alternatives to grilling.
- To air fry, cook at 360°F for 7 minutes on each side, ensuring thorough cooking.
