The easiest healthy air fryer plantain chips recipe (2 ingredients, gluten free, vegan)
Description
The easiest healthy air fryer plantain chips are prepared by peeling green plantains and cutting them diagonally into thin slices about a quarter-inch thick. Using an air fryer with a lightly greased basket allows the chips to cook evenly and become crisp without excess oil. The chips require turning halfway through cooking to ensure crispness on both sides, typically done at 370°F over 10 to 13 minutes.
Because the plantains are green, their flavor is mildly starchy and slightly sweet, providing a firm and crunchy chip-like texture when air-fried correctly. Optional seasonings such as chili flakes, cumin, coriander, salt, and black pepper add savory or spicy notes without overwhelming the natural flavor. Once cooked, the chips are cooled before eating to enhance crunchiness.
This recipe results in a gluten-free, vegan snack with minimal ingredients and easy preparation. The chips can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for up to three days. Their simplicity allows for various spice customizations to suit different flavor preferences.
Ingredients
- 2 green plantain medium
- cooking spray
- salt optional
- black pepper optional
- Spices chili flakes, cumin, coriander (optional)
Instructions
- Cut off the ends of the plantain. To peel the plantain, score the skin lengthwise without damaging the flesh. Then peel the plantain.
- Cut plantain into diagonal slices of about ¼-inch in thickness, using a knife or a mandoline.
- Spray the air fryer basket with oil.
- Lay the plantain chips in the basket in a single layer, without any overlap.
- Bake the chips in the air fryer at 370 F degrees for 6-8 minutes. Turn the slices over to the other side and cook for an additional 5 minutes or until crispy. Chips usually need 10-13 minutes in the air fryer in total.
- You can now sprinkle plátano chips with your choice of spices (I like cumin, coriander and chili flakes), or salt and pepper.
- Let them cool before eating. Store leftovers in an airtight container in room temperature for up to 3 days.
