The Ultimate Ham and Cheese Sliders Recipe

The Ultimate Ham and Cheese Sliders layer thick-cut ham, shredded Gruyere cheese, crispy bacon, and caramelized balsamic onions on sweet rolls brushed with a mustard-herb butter. These are baked covered then uncovered to melt the cheese and toast the tops, yielding warm, savory slider sandwiches rich with layered flavors and textures.

Description

This recipe starts by slowly caramelizing thinly sliced red onions in butter until golden, then finishing them with balsamic vinegar to add sweetness and acidity. A melted butter mixture featuring Dijon mustard, garlic, thyme, and Worcestershire sauce is prepared separately to coat the tops of the slider buns, imparting aromatic herb and tangy notes.

The sliders are assembled on sweet rolls by layering half of the shredded Gruyere cheese on the bottom buns, then evenly layering thick ham slices, the remaining cheese, crisped thick-cut bacon, and the caramelized onions. The tops are spread with fig jam for a touch of sweetness, placed on top, and brushed generously with the butter-herb mixture before covering with foil and baking.

Baking covered warms the sliders thoroughly and melds flavors, while a final uncovered bake browns the tops slightly. The combination of sweet rolls, savory ham and bacon, melted cheese, tangy mustard butter, and sweet onions creates a balanced handheld sandwich perfect for gatherings.

The sliders are recommended to serve with approximately two per person. They can be made a day ahead and refrigerated before baking, store for up to three days covered in the fridge, and are best reheated wrapped in foil in the oven to restore warmth and texture. Freezing is not recommended.
