Three Bean Chili Recipe
Description
The Three Bean Chili Recipe uses a combination of ground beef and sausage sautéed with diced onion, resulting in a savory and aromatic base. Canned white, pinto, and red kidney beans add variety in texture and substance, while diced tomatoes and tomato paste enrich the sauce. The chili seasoning packets provide a blend of spices that contribute to a well-rounded flavor profile. Simmering for at least 30 minutes allows the ingredients to harmonize and the chili to thicken suitably.
The chili offers a hearty texture from the meat and beans with a mildly spicy and savory tomato sauce. The mix of three types of beans gives a balance of creaminess and bite. Cooking in a Dutch oven or stockpot helps infuse flavors evenly. This dish can be served on its own or topped with extras such as shredded cheese, sour cream, or chopped green onions for additional richness and contrast.
The recipe is adaptable to different preferences by using lean ground turkey or chicken instead of beef, and varying the bean types, like adding black beans. Using mild or hot chili seasoning packets lets you control the heat. The sausage contributes fat and flavor, but can be omitted or replaced with all ground beef plus a bit of oil. These tips ensure the chili can suit different tastes and dietary needs while maintaining its comforting character.
Ingredients
- 1 cup yellow onion about one medium onion, diced
- 1 pound ground beef lean
- 1 pound ground sausage
- 2 - 15.5 ounce White beans drained and rinsed, canned
- 2 - 15.5 ounce pinto beans drained and rinsed, canned
- 15.5 ounce red kidney beans drained and rinsed, canned
- 2-1.25 ounce chili seasoning packets
- 2-14.5 ounce diced tomatoes undrained, canned
- 12 ounce tomato paste
Instructions
- Add ground beef, ground sausage, and onion to an 8-Quart Dutch oven or stockpot.
- Sauté onion and meat until the onion is soft and translucent and the meats are no longer pink. If you are using
- lean meats or swapping out the sausage, you can add a tablespoon of olive or canola oil to help with
- the sautéing.
- Add remaining ingredients: white beans, pinto beans, kidney beans, chili seasoning, diced
- tomatoes, and tomato paste.
- Stir and heat over medium until chili comes to a boil.
- Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for at least 30
- minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Remove from heat.
- Serve topped with desired toppings.
Notes
- White onion is a good substitute for yellow onion in this chili.
- Use lean ground beef varieties (85%-90%) or substitute with ground turkey or chicken; if using lean proteins, add a tablespoon of oil when sautéing.
- Sausage adds fat and flavor; mild, hot, or Italian varieties can be used, or substitute all ground beef with added oil as needed.
- Adjust bean amounts to taste; black beans can be included or swapped for any beans used.
- Try different canned tomatoes such as Ro-Tel or fire roasted diced tomatoes for added flavor.
- This chili can also be cooked in a slow cooker following appropriate directions.
