Tiropita: A Greek-Style Feta Cheese Appetizer
Description
Tiropita combines crumbled feta, cream cheese, and cottage cheese into a smooth filling enriched with beaten egg to bind the mixture. This filling is portioned onto squares of puff pastry or phyllo sheets, which are folded over and sealed with wet edges pressed by fork tines to prevent leaks during baking.
Baking at 400°F crisps and browns the pastry, creating flaky layers that provide a contrasting texture to the creamy cheese center. The brushing of egg white on the exterior adds sheen and helps the pastry brown evenly. The pastry can be cut into desired sizes, allowing flexibility for portioning appetizers.
This appetizer offers a rich, creamy taste with savory and slightly tangy cheese flavors enveloped in crisp pastry, making a satisfying finger food or starter. Variations in pastry choice allow for different textures and crispness levels.
For freezing, underbaking slightly before freezing helps maintain texture upon reheating. Defrosting before reheating ensures even warmth and preserves the pastry’s flakiness and filling consistency.
Ingredients
- 1 package Puff pastry sheets (or phyllo dough) 18 oz package
- 4 oz feta cheese (crumbled)
- 4 oz cream cheese (room temperature)
- 4 oz cottage cheese
- 1 egg (slightly beaten)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400˚F (200˚C)
- Mix the cheese and eggs together in a bowl until well-combined.
- Decide what size appetizer you would like and cut the puff pastry into equal sized pieces (use the phyllo as directed on the package). Place a spoonful of filling onto the pastry, and wet the edges.
- Fold the pastry over and seal with the tines of a fork.
- Place onto lined baking sheet and brush with some slightly beaten egg white.
- Bake in preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown.
Notes
- This recipe yields a generous amount of appetizers; halve the ingredients for fewer servings.
- When freezing, underbake slightly and freeze on a tray before storing in bags to maintain shape and texture.
- To reheat frozen tiropita, thaw at room temperature for about two hours, then bake at 375°F until warmed through and crisp.
