TLT Sandwich with Tempeh Bacon
Description
This sandwich replaces traditional bacon with tempeh strips marinated in a mixture of tamari, maple syrup, and smoked paprika, then baked until flavorful and slightly crispy. The tempeh's smoky-sweet marinade provides a savory element that complements fresh tomato slices and crisp romaine leaves. Bread of choice provides the base, and optional spreads like vegan mayo, hummus, or mustard add moisture and tang. Additional toppings such as sprouts enhance texture and visual appeal.
The sandwich is a plant-based take on the classic BLT format, often served for lunch or a casual meal. Baking tempeh ensures an even cook without frying. The smoky spices and vinegar-based tamari marinade balance the fresh vegetables.
Variations include using gluten-free bread and tamari for gluten-sensitive diets. The tempeh bacon recipe yields enough for approximately three sandwiches.
Ingredients
- 1-2 Roma tomato
- 6 leaves romaine lettuce (or spinach, etc.)
- 6 lices bread your favorite variety
- avocado vegan mayo, toppings of choice
- mayonnaise

For the tempeh bacon:
- 8 oz. tempeh
- 3 Tbsp. tamari (or soy sauce)
- 1 Tbsp. pure maple syrup (or less)
- 1/2 tsp. smoked paprika
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).
- Cut tempeh into small, fairly thin strips.*
- In a shallow dish, mix together the tamari, smoked paprika, and maple syrup. Add the tempeh strips. Flip to coat well, then set aside to marinate for about 10-15 minutes while your oven preheats.
- Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Place marinated tempeh strips in a single layer. Drizzle any leftover tamari mixture on top for even more flavor. (But this does make it saltier.)
- Bake for 10 minutes. Then flip and return to oven. Bake 10 more minutes.
- Assemble your sandwich: Layer bread, tomatoes, lettuce, tempeh bacon, and any other toppings of choice.
Notes
- Slice tempeh into about 12 thin strips from the 8 oz block for optimal texture.
- Yield: Tempeh bacon recipe is sufficient for about three sandwiches.
- Use gluten-free bread and tamari in the marinade for a gluten-free sandwich.
