Toasted Pecan Old Fashioned

The Toasted Pecan Old Fashioned cocktail uses a homemade toasted pecan-infused whiskey as its base. The pecans are roasted to release flavor, then soaked in whiskey for several days to impart a nutty aroma and taste. The cocktail itself blends this infused whiskey with sugar, Angostura bitters, and ice to create a classic Old Fashioned with a toasted pecan twist. The drink carries the warmth and richness of the whiskey enhanced by subtle roasted pecan notes.

Description

This Toasted Pecan Old Fashioned cocktail starts by making a toasted pecan-infused whiskey. Pecans are toasted until fragrant and brown, then cooled before being placed in a mason jar with a quality drinking whiskey. The mixture is left to infuse for 3 to 4 days, allowing the nutty, toasted aromas and flavors to meld with the whiskey.

To prepare the cocktail, a sugar cube or granulated sugar is muddled with a few dashes of Angostura bitters in an Old Fashioned glass. A large ice cube is added, and the pecan-infused whiskey is poured over, stirred to combine the flavors. The resulting drink offers a classic whiskey cocktail experience accented with a subtle toasted nut character from the infusion.

The recipe yields enough toasted pecan whiskey for six cocktails, while the cocktail instructions provided make one drink at a time. This approach lets one prepare the flavored whiskey in advance and enjoy individually crafted drinks with a distinct nutty profile that complements the traditional Old Fashioned components.

Ingredients

Servings

Toasted Pecan Whiskey (Makes enough for SIX drinks)

  • ½ cup pecans toasted
  • 1 ½ cups whiskey a good drinking one!

Toasted Pecan Old Fashioned

  • 1 sugar cube or ½ teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 4 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 2 oz. whiskey recipe above, Toasted Pecan flavor
  • ice spherical cube

Instructions

Make the Toasted Pecan Whiskey

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  2. Place the pecans on a baking sheet. Transfer to the preheated oven.
  3. Toast the pecans for 5-10 minutes or until browned and fragrant. (Keep an eye on them, as you could potentially burn them if not paying attention!)
  4. Remove from the oven, and let cool to room temperature.
  5. Transfer the cooled pecans to a mason jar, and pour the whiskey on top of them.
  6. Let the whiskey infuse for 3-4 days. (Don't go any longer than 4 days, as the pecans could dry the whiskey out.)

Make the Toasted Pecan Old Fashioned

  1. In an Old Fashioned or your favorite whiskey glass, measure the sugar cube/loose sugar and dash in the Angostura bitters.
  2. Use a muddler to break down the sugar cube and combine it with the bitters, coating the sides of the glass as the sugar and bitters mix.
  3. Place a large ice cube (or whiskey stones) in the glass. Pour the Toasted Pecan Whiskey over it, swirling it to mix with the bitters and sugar mixture.
  4. Enjoy immediately!

Notes

  • The pecan-infused whiskey recipe produces enough for six cocktails, making it convenient to prepare the base in advance.
  • The Old Fashioned cocktail recipe is for a single serving, allowing you to easily adjust quantities for more drinks.
