Tomato Jam

Tomato Jam blends ripe tomatoes with a balance of sugar, apple cider vinegar, and warming spices like cinnamon and cumin to create a thick, savory-sweet preserve. The optional jalapeño adds a mild heat that complements the jam's rich, tangy flavor. Slow simmering reduces the mixture to a luscious, spreadable consistency, making it versatile for pairing with cheeses, sandwiches, or as a condiment.

Description

Tomato Jam combines diced ripe tomatoes with sugar or honey, apple cider vinegar, and a hint of spices including cinnamon and cumin, cooked over low heat until thick and jam-like. The inclusion of jalapeño or serrano chile brings an optional subtle spiciness that balances the natural sweetness and acidity of the tomatoes. As it simmers, the mixture reduces and intensifies in flavor, resulting in a rich, textured jam without peeling or seeding the tomatoes.

This jam can enhance a variety of dishes, such as serving alongside cheese platters, spreading on toast, or as a flavorful addition to savory meals. Its thick texture and balanced flavor profile make it a useful pantry condiment.

For best results, use fresh, ripe tomatoes and allow plenty of time for the jam to reduce to the desired thickness. Store in the refrigerator for up to 10 days or freeze for longer preservation. Reheat or cook longer if the consistency is too loose.

  • 1 ½ pounds tomatoes diced, about 4 cups, ripe
  • cup granulated sugar or honey

  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt

Notes

  • Use about 12 medium ripe tomatoes to yield 1 ½ pounds diced as this recipe requires.
  • Store tomato jam in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 10 days or freeze portions in zippered bags for up to 6 months.
  • If the jam feels too thin after cooking, continue to simmer gently until it thickens to your liking.
  • Peeling and seeding the tomatoes is not necessary for this recipe.
