Tomato paste replacement for canned tomato

This tomato paste replacement combines tomato paste, flour, water, and sugar to create a liquid that can substitute canned tomatoes in recipes. It thickens upon cooking because of the flour, allowing it to mimic the texture when simmered in dishes like soups, stews, and sauces, making it useful when canned tomatoes are not available.

Description

The recipe blends tomato paste with flour and water to create a smooth, pourable mixture. The addition of sugar balances acidity and enhances tomato flavor. When cooked, the flour thickens the mixture, producing a texture similar to canned tomatoes. It can be added directly to recipes at the point where canned tomatoes are used and does not need pre-thickening, though simmering briefly enhances consistency.

This substitute is versatile for various dishes that require canned tomatoes including bolognese, minestrone soup, curries, and pasta bakes. It can be simmered quickly or cooked for extended periods without quality loss. The mixture stores well in the refrigerator for five days and can be frozen after simmering and cooling.

Ingredients

  • 4 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1.5 tbsp flour
  • 1 1/2 cups water , separated
  • 1.5 tsp sugar

Instructions

  1. Whisk together 1/4 cup water (65ml) with the flour until lump free.
  2. Then mix in remaining water, tomato paste and sugar.

How to use it

  1. Use in recipes in place of canned tomato, add it at the time the recipe calls for canned tomato to be added. It will be watery while it's "raw", but the flour will thicken the mixture as it cooks in things like bolognese, soup (like Minestrone), curries (like this Coconut Lentil Curry) and pasta bakes.
  2. Pictures in post show the thickness after cooking on stove for 3 minutes on medium high - not necessary to do if added into a recipe then cooked.
  3. There is no limit for how long it can be cooked for - you can use it for a quick recipe like this Bacon Pasta, or simmered for hours like in Ragu.
  4. Fridge storing - will keep for 5 days in the fridge.
  5. Freezing - simmer 3 minutes on medium high, stirring regularly, until it thickens. Cool, freeze.
