Tomato Sandwich
Description
To make this sandwich, sourdough bread slices are lightly toasted to provide a subtle crunch and structure. Thick slices of heirloom tomato are placed on bread spread evenly with mayonnaise, which adds creaminess and moisture. Finely chopped chives sprinkled on the mayo impart a gentle onion flavor that pairs well with the tomato’s freshness.
Flaky salt such as Maldon flakes seasoning the tomatoes enhances their natural flavor without overpowering, creating a balanced taste. Cutting the sandwich in half after assembling makes it easy to eat. Serving immediately retains the tomato’s juiciness and bread’s crispness.
Ingredients
- 2 lices sourdough bread
- 1 tomato large heirloom
- 2-3 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon chives (finely chopped)
- salt such as Maldon, a few pinches, flaky
Instructions
- Lightly toast the sourdough bread.
- Slice the tomatoes a little over ¼ inch (about ¾ cm) thick.
- Spread the mayonnaise onto both slices of bread.
- Sprinkle the finely chopped chives onto the mayo-ed bread. Place 2-3 tomato slices side by side on one slice of bread. Sprinkle with the flakey salt. Repeat with another three or four slices of tomato and more salt.
- Close up the sandwich, and cut in half using a serrated knife. Enjoy immediately.
