Tostones Recipe (How to Make Tostones)

Tostones are twice-fried green plantain slices, a popular side dish in Latin American and Caribbean cuisine, easy to make at home and always delicious.

Ingredients

  • 3 plantain green
  • 1.5 cups vegetable oil or as needed, or canola oil
  • 1 tablespoon salt plus more as needed
  • lime juice of 1
  • For Serving. Sauce/dip options here.

Instructions

  1. Slice off the ends of the plantains, then carefully slice through the peel. Remove the peel and discard. Slice the plantains into 1 inch pieces.
  2. Fill a large Dutch oven or pot with 2.5 inches vegetable oil and heat over medium-high heat to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). You can also use your fryer.
  3. Fry the plantains in batches for 4-5 minutes per side, until tender but not crisp.
  4. Remove and drain on a paper towel lined plate.
  5. Flatten each fried plantain using a small pan, heavy spatula, or the bottom of a large bottle. Don’t thin too much or they can fall apart.
  6. Return to the hot oil and fry each piece again for 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Drain on paper towels, then sprinkle with sea salt, lime juice, and serve.
