Traditional French Mulled Wine (Vin Chaud)

This Traditional French Mulled Wine (Vin Chaud) blends two bottles of red wine with brandy, orange juice, and warming spices including cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, star anise, cloves, and optional cranberries. The mixture is boiled briefly then simmered to meld the flavors for a festive, spiced drink.

Description

Traditional French Mulled Wine, or Vin Chaud, combines red wine and brandy with fresh orange slices, orange juice, and a selection of aromatic whole spices like cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, star anise, and cloves. The blend is brought to a boil, then simmered gently to allow the spices and fruit to infuse the wine, creating a warm and fragrant beverage.

The orange juice is used as a natural sweetener and acidic balance, though granulated sugar can be substituted if preferred. The addition of cranberries provides optional color and slight tartness. The gentle simmering extracts the essence of the spices without boiling off all the alcohol immediately.

Vin Chaud is traditionally enjoyed warm during colder months or festive gatherings and pairs well with light appetizers or dessert. Heating slowly and serving immediately preserves the aroma and taste of the spices.
