Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ tablespoons baking powder
  • 1 ½ cups water not boiling, hot
  • 1 quart vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Stir together the flour, salt, and baking powder in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Gradually whisk in the water until incorporated to form a sticky dough. You may find that you need to add additional water.
  3. Cover and let the dough rest for 2 hours.
  4. Divide the dough into pieces the size of a tennis ball.
  5. Gently flatten out the dough as thin as possible without tearing it.
  6. Pour 2 inches of oil into a large heavy pot.
  7. Heat the oil over medium heat to 350 F.
  8. Make a small hole in the center of each piece of dough.
  9. Fry one piece of dough in the oil until golden brown on one side.
  10. Flip and continue cooking until golden brown on the second side.
  11. Place the fry bread on a paper towel-lined plate.
  12. Repeat with the remaining dough.
  13. Serve topped with desired toppings.
