Tuna Melt
Description
This recipe uses drained canned albacore tuna blended with mayonnaise, finely chopped red onion, fresh lemon juice, and dried oregano for a flavorful and moist filling. Salt and pepper are added to taste. The filling is spread on thick white sandwich bread slices that have been buttered on the outside to enable browning and crisp texture during cooking.
Cheese slices such as cheddar, provolone, or swiss are layered on top of the tuna mixture, optionally with additional toppings like sliced avocado or tomato, before closing with another buttered bread slice. Cooking over medium-low heat in a skillet melts the cheese and toasts the bread evenly, resulting in a warm, crunchy exterior and gooey interior.
The sandwich makes a hearty meal served hot, and variations include open-faced versions or air fryer preparation. Leftover tuna filling can be refrigerated for several days. Using high-quality tuna packed in water and draining well ensures the best texture and flavor.
Ingredients
- 12 ounces albacore tuna drained, canned, packed in water
- 1/3 cup mayonnaise , more to taste (or substitute half mayo, half plain Greek yogurt)
- 2 Tablespoons onion red, finely chopped
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice fresh
- pinch oregano dried
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
- 4 lices white sandwich bread thick cut
- 4 lices cheese , cheddar, provolone, swiss, or your fav kind
- avocado optional, sliced
- tomato optional, sliced
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, combine tuna, mayonnaise, onion, lemon juice, and oregano and stir until thoroughly combined. Add more mayo if you want mixture wetter. Season with salt and pepper, to taste.
- Butter outsides of bread slices. Layer tuna mixture on inside portion of bread. Add cheese, desired toppings, then another piece of cheese and top with bread.
- Heat a skillet over medium-low heat. Add sandwiches and cook until bottom bread is toasted, and cheese is warm. Flip and cook on the other side until bread is toasted and cheese has melted.
Notes
- Use well-drained, high-quality canned white albacore tuna packed in water for the best filling texture.
- Choose cheese varieties like cheddar, provolone, or swiss depending on taste preference; pepper jack or American cheeses also work.
- Optional toppings such as sliced tomato, avocado, bacon, sprouts, jalapeños, or hot sauce can be added to enhance flavor and texture.
- Open-faced tuna melts can be broiled in the oven without a top bread slice.
- Air fryer cooking is possible at 370°F for 2-3 minutes per side until cheese melts.
- Make the tuna filling ahead and store airtight in fridge for up to 4 days to save time.
