Turkey Apple Cheddar Sandwich
Description
This sandwich starts with two slices of sourdough bread, one spread lightly with mayonnaise topped with thin slices of Havarti cheese. The other slice gets a spread of dill pickle-flavored mustard and thin apple slices layered over it. Oven-roasted turkey breast slices are added, followed by dill pickle coins for acidity and extra crunch. Tossed arugula in lemon juice and seasoning adds a peppery and bright green layer, while dill pickle-flavored potato chips introduce a salty crispness.
The sandwich combines creamy, crunchy, tart, and savory flavors with soft and crisp textures from the bread and fillings. It can be served fresh or grilled for a golden, melted version. The ingredients balance each other so no single flavor overwhelms, making it appealing for those who enjoy a mix of sweet and savory in a sandwich.
The recipe suggests assembling the sandwich the day of eating for best freshness but allows prepping ahead with tight wrapping. Grilling the sandwich with butter on both sides creates a warm and crispy finish to enjoy a different texture.
Ingredients
- 2 lices bread I used Trader Joe’s sourdough
- 3 lices turkey breast oven roasted
- 2 lices havarti cheese
- 1 apple small size
- ½ cup arugula
- 2 tablespoons mustard from Trader Joe’s, dill pickle flavored
- 1 tablespoon mayonnaise light
- 6-8 dill pickle coins
- 6-8 potato chips Trader Joe’s, dill pickle flavor
- lemon juice optional, fresh
Instructions
- Lay two pieces of bread on a cutting board.
- On one slice of bread, spread a thin layer of mayo thinly and add a few slices of cheese on top. The thinner the cheese, the better. There is less chance of getting food stuck to the roof of your mouth.
- On the other slice of bread, spread dill pickle mustard and layer thinly sliced apple slices on top.
- Next, add the turkey breast on top of the apples. Then, add the pickle coins. If you’d like, add another squirt of mayo to act as some sandwich glue.
- Toss the arugula in some fresh lemon juice & salt and pepper before adding it on top of the turkey.
- For extra crunch, add dill pickle chips to the sandwich on top of the arugula.
- Now, let's flip the sandwich together. Take the piece of bread with just mayo and cheese on it and place it on top of the other slice. Push it all together. You'll hear a crunch if you add potato chips to it :)
- Slice in half and ENJOY!
Notes
- For best texture and freshness, prepare and eat the sandwich on the same day.
- If preparing ahead, wrap tightly with plastic wrap and keep refrigerated until lunchtime.
- Grilling the sandwich with butter on each side for 3-4 minutes over medium heat yields a toasted, crisp outside and melts the cheese nicely.
