Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 1/2 lbs ground turkey
  • 2 teaspoons seasoned salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 carrot finely chopped
  • 1 onion finely chopped, medium
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 3 tomato sauce 8 oz each) can
  • 8 whole wheat hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the turkey and cook, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Season with the seasoned salt and pepper.
  2. When the meat has mostly browned, add the carrot and onion and cook until softened.
  3. Add the garlic and cook for another minute.
  4. Reduce the heat to medium and add the brown sugar, vinegar and Worcestershire sauce. Cook for 5 minutes.
  5. Stir in the tomato paste and cook for another minute, then stir in the tomato sauce.
  6. Cover the skillet and reduce the heat to medium-low. Allow the mixture to simmer for 5 minutes, or until you reach your desired consistency.
  7. Serve on the whole wheat buns.

Notes

  • SUBSTITUTIONS: Any ground meat can be substituted for the ground turkey. The carrots can be substituted for another vegetable, as well, or completely left out. You can also serve this on lettuce leaves or on another bun of your choice.
  • FREEZE: The filling freezes very well. I like to freeze it in freezer safe ziplock bags because they can be frozen flat and then take less room in the freezer. Freeze for up to 3 months, although I have frozen it longer successfully.
  • STORE: Store any leftovers in the refrigerator for 3-5 days. You can reheat on the stovetop, but you may need to add additional liquid. You can also reheat in the microwave.
